Tuesday, September 5, 2017 (London, ONTARIO) – The London Lightning announced Tuesday that Canadian Joel Friesen will return to the club for the 2017-18 season.

“It is extremely exciting to be coming back to a championship team. We have great support from the city, it means a lot to come back to London.” said Friesen. “It’s a chance to win another championship; that is what everyone is here to do.”

Friesen, a 6’5 guard from Abbotsford, BC, was a key piece of the Lightning’s success last season. He was named to the first team of the NBL All-Canadian selections after averaging 11 points and four rebounds per game, while shooting 41% from three point range.

“We are glad to have Joel back. He is a great team player.” said owner-gm Vito Frijia. “His enthusiasm and hard work is an example to everyone else on the team.”

Head coach, Keith Vassell, echoed Frijia’s thoughts when asked what Joel brings to the team. ”He is a really good person, a fantastic basketball player, and he is still getting better every day. He works hard and is a real winner. I am really excited to have Joel add to the culture, the winning culture, that’s already been established in London.”

Friesen is ready for any new challenges this season, “I am ready to get back out there and compete. I’ve had a pretty good off season, my body feels good and I am ready to show everybody that I’m one of the best Canadians in the league. I’m excited to get out there and prove myself, again.”
